ROOSTER & COCKERELS WITH COCKSCOMB PLANT

Period: Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911).
Date: 18th century.
Medium: Nephrite jade.
Colour: Light celadon and russet.
Dimensions: H. 12.7 cm.; L. 16.5 cm.; D. 6.0 cm.

The scene is made up of a large rooster and two small cockerels amidst cockscomb plants. The rooster holds a stem of cockscomb in his beak.  The plant is common in the wilds of China, where it is extensively cultivated.  The flower is called Ji Guan Huan, the literal translation of which is 'Chicken crown flower', and is used in Chinese medicine.
